Brixton Boundaries - London Festival of Architecture 2019

Squire & Partners collaborated with design studio AWMA to create Brixton Boundaries, an interactive installation which explored the South London neighbourhood’s unique experience of boundaries as part of London Festival of Architecture 2019.

Recognising that boundaries form part of our everyday experience, we set out to identify which helped people to feel secure and which form barriers to growth and inclusion. Following a community workshop involving local people of various ages and backgrounds, we highlighted ways in which boundaries shape our community, and explored creative ways to break them down.

The immersive installation revealed physical and emotional barriers through a ’16 Voices’ illuminated exhibition which presented personal experiences and posed questions about how and why we perceive boundaries. Workshop responses were also communicated via a Brixton ‘word map’ at street level and a film documenting the process.

Visitors were invited to be part of the evolving display by adding their own experience to an interactive map and graffiti wall. Throughout the week local neighbourhood and school groups explored how boundaries define them individually and as part of the wider community.
