Stone Tapestry was unveiled at Surface Design Show 2022, designed by Squire & Partners to highlight innovative uses, applications and the reuse of natural stone.
Squire & Partners was invited by Stone Federation for the second year running to design a bespoke installation for the show’s Stone Gallery, which sat at the centre of the show.
In line with the 2022 show’s theme of sustainability, Stone Tapestry focused on the locality, application and reuse of natural stone, and showcased some of the impressive materials quarried in the UK – tapping into the ongoing conversation around using natural stone to deliver a more sustainable built environment.
The explorative piece created for the 2020 exhibit was reused – with tables crafted by furniture maker Lema SpA and a tapestry of stones finished by high-end natural stone supplier SolidNature. A new array of stones was added to this which explored different ways of reimagining and reusing the materials.
For 2022, SolidNature compiled and installed 14 distinctive stones from across the British Isles, supplied by Albion Stone, Burlington Stone, Ethical Stone Co. (in partnership with Britannicus Stone) and Haysom Purbeck Stone.
Stone samples were finished in different ways, from polished and sand-blasted to leathered and flamed - demonstrating the material’s versatility, and reuse was explored by reimagining a single piece of stone carved into a number of different objects, giving it a secondary life.
