London Society Talk: Henry Squire on modern craft

April 2016

Join Henry Squire on 21 July at the London Society as he talks through the use of craft, ornament and innovation at Hans Place, a collection of apartments in Knightsbridge which present a modern interpretation of the intricate gauged brickwork which characterises the area and its much loved red brick buildings.

Henry has led the design team to develop bespoke, crafted brickwork that features on spandrels, lintels and the chimney of the new development.

Initial prototypes were tested and evolved with Squire and Partners’ in-house modelshop, then simplified to a geometric brick that minimised the number of different components. Tests into traditional manufacturing methods concluded that accuracy of fabrication was key to achieve the required tight mortar joint and overall sculpted appearance. A CNC-led process was determined where bricks are oversized, CNC profiled, hand-finished and then finally laid by highly skilled artisan bricklayers in a 1mm lime putty.
