West India Quay lies to the north of Canary Wharf, and was a key part in the redevelopment of the Docklands. A constricted site, bounded to the north by the Dockland Light Railway and to the south by the dock, it required a mix of uses that would support the burgeoning financial centre of Canary Wharf.
The masterplan devised a mix of activities which utilised the dockside for eating, drinking and recreation, and provided shops, a health club, a ten-screen cinema, museum and car park which shielded the quayside from the railway and roads. A new triangular public space connects the contemporary additions to the historic dockside.
Handsome Grade I listed warehouses were restored, and a new slender landmark tower was proposed which provides hotel suites and serviced apartments, designed as a visual counterpoint to the monumental brick warehouses. Its thin end is visible from the DLR, but its south façade enjoys panoramic views over the dock and the curve of the river beyond.
