The Building Society is a new flexible workspace in Fitzrovia launched by structural engineers Elliott Wood. The expanding company developed more space than they needed with the intention of creating a hub for their UK offices, as well as a new co-working space and collaborative community for individuals or organisations working within the built environment sector.
Conceived in collaboration with Squire & Partners’ interiors team, spaces are driven by sustainability and creativity and follow Elliot Wood’s philosophy of ‘engineering a better society’. Designs reference the building’s Fitzrovia setting, celebrate structural elements and raw materials, and include greenery within workspaces. Layouts were developed with collaboration, networking, wellbeing and agile working in mind, creating flexible spaces for informal learning and events.
The 12,000 sq ft space supports a member network where people are encouraged to collaborate, debate and lead change. Three memberships comprise drop in use (10 hours/week), hot-desking (20 hours/week) and allocated desks for full time members.
Two floors at ground and lower ground level are connected by a bespoke perforated metal staircase with feature planting. Bespoke furniture and desks are complemented by rugs and plants, including a feature planting display on the perforated metal staircase.
Textiles and leather give a soft contrast to the perforated metal mesh, brushed stainless steel finishes and concrete floor. The team aimed to re-use, recycle and source materials locally, including a reception desk created using surplus timber.
Tenants of The Building Society span across the built environment, from architects and engineers to property developers and project management consultants, who share a common purpose to create environmental and societal reform through their work, and through a program of talks and events, create a community that shares experiences as well as knowledge.
