HSBC Private Bank took over the former Conservative Club and wanted to change it into a modern financial services building without losing its intimate historic character. A full height atrium was introduced between the buildings to provide an interface between the historic and the contemporary, providing views from each building into the other. The intersection is defined by the rear wall, which on one side has classical round arches and on the other modern square arches.
The glazed dome roof of the listed building was restored and, above it, a new glass roof was added creating a double height gathering space; a focal point from which all aspects of the scheme can be viewed.
