Squire & Partners was invited to revisit its own refurbishment of Greencoat House, originally completed in 2000. Since then, tenants had changed from primarily media to advertising, and the building needed upgrading to suit modern requirements.
Squire & Partners was invited to revisit its own refurbishment of Greencoat House, originally completed in 2000. Since then, tenants had changed from primarily media to advertising, and the building needed upgrading to suit modern requirements.
The industrial character of the Victorian former depository was a strong influence on the design, which sought to express the robust structure within modern open plan office suites. Structural metalwork was painted dark grey to feature prominently, complemented by reclaimed timber floors. Original features such as a woodblock floor and vaulted concrete ceilings were exposed and highlighted.
Two existing lightwells at the centre of the building were transformed to become naturally ventilated semi-external terraces, accessed directly from office tenancies. Furnished with bespoke planters and timber benches, the vertical gardens provide a unique break out space.
Bespoke elements of the design include a laser-cut folded black metal bench which references Victorian metalwork patterns, and a dark steel reception desk designed to complement the industrial aesthetic.
