Squire and Partners have undertaken the refurbishment and extension of a Grade II* listed Georgian Townhouse at 3 Cavendish Square to provide high specification offices.
Dating back to 1740, the building received Grade II* listing due to its original plan form as well as historical features such as timber panelling and decorative fireplaces, many of which are still in situ.
Inspiration for the design was taken from British quality and craftsmanship, drawing upon objects which require the crafting of multiple parts to achieve a finely detailed composition. Works included the cleaning, repair and redecoration of existing facades and internal features, including a central feature staircase, historic timber panelling and Georgian fireplaces.
A poor-quality 1970s extension was replaced by a double-storey annex with mezzanine floor that complements the original building by using a limited palette of traditional natural building materials. A simply detailed glazed link connects the modern addition to the historic property.
A sensitively considered second mansard roof has been designed at a 30-degree angle, in order to create additional workspace while remaining unobtrusive when viewed from the square, while a landscaped courtyard garden to the rear was reinstated to offer outdoor space for tenants.
