This corner site is located on one of London’s principal thoroughfares. Formerly occupied by undistinguished late 19th and 20th century buildings, it backs on to a tranquil area of gardens around the ancient Savoy Chapel.
While sensitive to its context, the new 2700 sqm, six storey office building is uncompromisingly modern in appearance – strongly modelled, its external facades feature limestone panels set in metal frames with curved bays of Portland stone and glass to emphasise the junction of the Strand with the narrow Savoy Street, which leads to the Embankment.
With the support of the client, Squire and Partners worked with artists Langlands & Bell on a major artwork for the building. This occupies an area of the Strand facade adjacent to the main entrance and consists of a stone relief depicting the area of cityscape around the building. Passers-by find the city re-presented as a view from above on the facade.
