Description
Squire and Partners’ scheme for the former St John’s Wood Barracks creates an attractive residential community, which relates to the unique characteristics and heritage of St John’s Wood. The plan is centred on new garden square, creating a setting for the Grade II listed Riding School, most recently used by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.
Apartment buildings frame the remaining three sides of the garden to create a formal square as a focal point for the development. To the south, a long linear garden provides a landscaped setting for a group of houses, whilst on Queen’s Terrace a series of retail units animate the streetscape.
The design language is contemporary whilst respecting the vernacular of St John’s Wood Conservation Area. Traditional materials such as London Stock brick and natural stone complement existing buildings, whilst modern detailing roots them firmly in their time. References to the King’s Troop cavalry add richness to the façade, with perforated twisting metal balustrades referencing leather straps used in the horse’s tack.
