Description
The historic city centre of Ljubljana suffered decline during the 20th century, due to the diversion of activity, business and retailing away from the centre towards larger purpose-built office and shopping complexes on the outskirts.
The aim of this proposed masterplan was to create a new quarter to the City of Ljubljana that healed the divide between the town centre and the industrial north of the city.
The key concept of our design proposals was to create a green bridge which linked the sprawling Smartinska area to the city centre. Rather than creating two competing districts at either end of a connecting avenue, our approach was to ensure the two zones had uses that were complementary to one other. The aim was to reinvigorate the town centre and its businesses, to create animation, activity and permeability, and break down divisive barriers which disconnect the cohesion of the city.
