Squire & Partners’ designs for Paddington Green Police Station in Westminster continue the practice’s work with Berkeley to complete the overall West End Gate masterplan.

The vision for the project is to provide a new residential-led mixed use development combined with extensive public realm improvements, to deliver a high-quality accessible neighbourhood that connects to and enhances the vibrant West End Gate community.

The three buildings on the site form a cluster of elegant tall buildings that will provide 556 new homes, of which 39% are affordable, along with new retail and community space that brings much needed activation to the ground floor condition.

Improved permeability into Newcastle Place is achieved through a series of avenues and plazas that further enhance the fantastic community within the West End Gate masterplan and the surrounding area. The public realm transforms Newcastle Place to create a green urban oasis in the heart of the city, and retail space will continue the activation of Edgware Road down from West End Gate and onto Harrow Road.

On the corner of Paddington Green, the 24-storey Block I sits comfortably next to 14-17 Paddington Green and the conservation area beyond, marking the entry point to the masterplan from the west. The façade articulation draws inspiration from traditional brickwork tones to create slender vertical columns.

In the centre of the site, Block J steps down in height to create a 17-storey building that draws inspiration from the existing, smaller scale mansion blocks of the West End Gate masterplan. A white podium base connects the building visually to the podium of Block K, which in itself acts as a new gateway tower marking the entrance to central London at this key junction between Edgware Road and the Westway.

The tower has been developed as a slender and elegant building form, featuring a Portland stone coloured façade. Inspiration is taken from the existing Westmark to create a family of finely crafted tall buildings that make a refined and elegant contribution to the design and urban grain of the wider area.
