We were invited by the London Property Review to propose a New Facade for London as a high quality, replicable, characterful façade addressing the future of residential development.
Squire and Partners’ concept was based on the principal that, historically, homes in the capital have been of a homogenous style, with limited opportunity for self-expression on the external skin. Whilst homes in the future need to respond to changing requirements in terms of the environment, affordability and flexibility, we believe they should also be able to accommodate a degree of self-expression.
These homes offer a series of options for personalisation, whilst fitting within a framework of standardised units which can be merged either vertically or horizontally. The owner can choose from a range of external features such as transparent / opaque / patterned windows, projecting balconies, vertical planted walls, ‘airing cupboards’ to enable clothes to be dried with fresh air, bicycle storage, solar panels and even advertising space. The premise is that every square centimetre of the façade has a function, nothing is superfluous.
