Lanterns Court lies just a few hundred yards from Canary Wharf and marks the border between Victorian terraces to the south east and what was until recently an industrial zone beside the dock.
The buildings adopt a monolithic language derived from the area’s industrial heritage and inspired by Corbusier’s Unité housing, where playful moves are made within a formal frame.
Within the superstructure, individual apartments are placed to create a vocabulary of solid panels, balconies and glass doors.
The orientation and location of each apartment determines the precise choice of cladding: Living rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glass, while bedrooms have smaller windows. As the apartments rise higher up, thermal mass is exchanged for thermal-efficient glass containing solar shading. At their summits the buildings open up into sky gardens and projecting balconies.
At one corner of the scheme stands a distinctive round tower providing a local landmark for the Millennium Quarter.
