Squire & Partners’ consented design for new student residences adjacent to Hangar Lane underground station will regenerate an underused brownfield site within the Hangar Lane gyratory to provide 565 units of student accommodation alongside new public and private green spaces. In addition to residential accommodation the scheme creates facilities including classrooms, study areas, social spaces, a bike store, a gymnasium and retail units for students and the local community. Student accommodation units are divided into several types, all with en suite shower rooms, kitchenettes, desks and built in wardrobes, based on a prefabricated modular container.

Designs are influenced by the Art Deco heritage of the local area and a desire to draw the natural environment into the site, employing a contemporary treatment to create a distinctive landmark for this gateway to central London. The building mass is divided into elements of varying heights from 7 to 13 storeys, decreasing in height as they approach Hangar Lane underground station. Angled pre-cast stone elements give solidity and movement to the facade, whilst green metal infill panels provide richness and texture.

Two new south facing landscaped squares have been created, one exclusively for the resident students, and a second with retail and open spaces for the local community, bringing a calm social space to the centre of the site and creating a permeable and welcoming route for local people crossing the site. A variety of new trees, as well as hard and soft landscaping, is used to shield the ground floor area from the surrounding roads.
