Squire and Partners obtained planning consent in a record eleven weeks for a 1.6 hectare community-led development in Clapham. The site, occupied by the Victorian Freemans warehouse and light industrial buildings, had long been the subject of heated debate between developers and surrounding neighbours.
Following a comprehensive process of public consultation, Squire and Partners’ response was to provide a wide mix of residential units – varying from 6-bedroom houses to studio apartments - with office use retained in the main building and a new rooftop extension.
Key elements in the scheme were the retention of the landmark Victorian printworks on Clapham Road and the restoration of a Grade II listed building, currently on English Heritage’s ‘at risk’ register.
Local amenities such as shops, cafes and restaurants were proposed at ground floor level. A variety of accessible green space defines two new routes through the site and, at the centre, a large public square is a focal point for the community.
