The development of Capital East residential apartments at Royal Victoria Docks was commissioned following a successful masterplan for the area designed by Squire and Partners in 2000.

The waterside location retains visual remnants of its industrial heritage in the form of two listed cranes on the dockside, which informed the design of a group of warehouse-scale buildings addressing the water. The architectural language was deliberately functional, with a rigorous hierarchy designed to give prominence to the primary structure of the concrete frame.

Individual blocks are placed six metres apart leaving narrow slots which frame dramatic views outwards to the dock, and inwards to a landscaped garden at the centre of the development.

Capital East was awarded ‘Best London Development’ by the Daily Mail UK Property Awards, ‘Best Apartment’ and ‘Best Interior Layout’ by the What House Awards, and was shortlisted for the 2006 Housing Design Awards.
