Squire and Partners’ mixed use masterplan at Brighton Marina will provide up to 1,000 new private and affordable homes supported by high quality retail, restaurant and commercial units alongside a series of community workspaces. A significant area of public realm is proposed, establishing an attractive pedestrian route which links the marina to central Brighton.

Designs take inspiration from the bold Regency architecture of Brighton & Hove characterised by green squares and crescents, and its endurance over time to cope with extreme elements and changing lifestyles. The theme of erosion was also explored, referencing the site’s unique position between the sea and the white cliffs to the north.

The resulting masterplan consists of eight buildings of varying height, linked by a series of landscaped spaces that weave through the site. A landmark tower acts a beacon for the development and provides far-reaching views along the historic Brighton seafront and out to sea. The open spaces create relief from the dense urban grain, and both visually and physically link the city to the sea.

A robust palette of materials was selected to create texture and detail, whilst protecting against the marine environment.
