Following a competitive selection process, Squire and Partners is part of a prestigious team of UK architects working on the Msheireb Downtown Doha masterplan in the historical centre of Doha, Qatar. The masterplan features 226 buildings in total, and provides accommodation for an estimated population of 27,000 residents, a national archive, theatre and museum, hotels and heritage quarter.
The project seeks to reverse the pattern of development in the region for homogenised developments which rely on car transportation, by creating a city centre which supports social and civic activities to revive the old commercial core.
The development required the creation of a new vernacular, which the practice responded to by fusing traditional Qatari architecture with a modern and sustainable approach to design. Cues were taken from historic proportions, simple forms, the use of layering and ornamentation to modify light, and a strong emphasis on sustainably responding to the challenges of the local environment.
Spaces between buildings are considered through pace, rhythm and interest, creating a relationship which plays with diversity and unity in architecture, vibrancy and tranquillity and the delicate handling of light and shade.
Squire and Partners is responsible for six buildings across Phases II and III of the scheme, consisting of a variety of residential apartment buildings, offices and a hotel.
