The brief for this luxury resort on the island of Jeju, south of the Korean peninsula, was to provide design ideas for the refurbishment of an existing hotel and create opportunities on the overall site owned by the hotelier, Shineville.
The brief for this luxury resort on the island of Jeju, south of the Korean peninsula, was to provide design ideas for the refurbishment of an existing hotel and create opportunities on the overall site owned by the hotelier, Shineville.
The resulting concept included a comprehensive refurbishment of the hotel both inside and out, as well as the creation of an eco-boutique retail area.
Designs took inspiration from the local landscape and nature of the Island, including the Mount Hallasan Volcano which can be seen from the hotel grounds. The hotel and retail area have been re-clad in the local Jeju lava stone, with bronze accents that echo the contrasting lava of the Volcano against the dark surrounding rock.
The hotel interiors draw nature inside, taking inspiration from the flora and fauna of the island as well as the elements of fire, earth, air and sea. Traditional materials and craftsmanship found on the island, such as Hanji doors and latticed woodwork, are also used to ensure that the contemporary resort remains firmly rooted in its surroundings.
