Squire & Partners’ proposal for The Chapel creates a lively, mixed used development on the corner site of the former Chapel Pub in Westminster, breathing new life into a derelict and underused site in a prominent location.
The new development will provide a six-storey 44-room hotel alongside ground floor retail space and a new public house that will utilise the ground floor and existing basement. The public house and hotel will act as separate but complementary entities which embrace a cross pollination of uses.
The bull-nosed development follows the curved line of the street and reinstates the presence of the corner to complete the intersection between Chapel Street and Old Marylebone Road.
Portland stone facades respond to the surrounding vernacular, embellished with brass details including banding, window frames and the balustrades of Juliet balconies. A palette of black granite and brass highlights the ground floor street frontage of the hotel, pub and retail units, reactivating the street.
At roof level, a green roof will support a wide variety of planting and provide ecosystem services such as retaining water and insulating the building.
