The Sand bar project transformed a rundown pub in Clapham, with a cramped and inconvenient layout, into a high quality venue. In total, nearly 280 sqm of space was refurbished at basement, ground and first floor levels – the first floor is designed as a private members’ club.

The reconstruction provided a series of intimate spaces at ground floor level, with half the area raised to provide better headroom for WCs now located in the basement.

The seating areas are defined by a series of low walls and screens – slit openings in these divisions allow views across the bar. They are also used to expose and illuminate the perimeter brick walls and to display objects.

The predominant material in the bar is natural, unpainted sand cement render, with concealed lighting used to produce a sympathetic warm glow. The bar top is of pure, dyed resin panels on a steel structure with lighting beneath and a dark brown leather front.
