The practice was commissioned to masterplan a new mountain spa resort near Marbella, Spain. The site is located within a lush mountainous setting, and includes plans for a luxury hotel, villas and spa.
The brief was to create a unique hotel experience set back from the coast of Marbella, taking inspiration from the surrounding forested valleys and freshwater springs. The design preserves the existing character of the site by merging the natural steep terrain with the built environment, while providing exceptional views overlooking the Sierra Real Natural Park and the Embalse de la Concepción water reservoir.
Concepts for a new hotel-villa typology are a modern interpretation of the local ‘Cortijo’ building vernacular. The plan proposes an ecologically sensitive intervention on the terrain – low level villas are scattered to the south and east of the site, slightly increasing in density at the northern end. The creation of several smaller buildings is proposed on the viewing plateau with natural overflowing terraced spa pools overlooking the valley reservoir.
