Squire and Partners’ plans for a boutique hotel on Borough High Street in Southwark have been consented for client Raykor Limited.
The 7-storey hotel will provide 50 guest rooms alongside a public cafe and reception space at ground level.
The main façade of 5 storeys has a bottom-middle-top arrangement inspired by the building next door. At ground level is a public café, framed in glazed brick and animating the streetscape. The middle section has regular punched hole windows, while a cornice line and a half brick recess defines the top storey. The two set-back top floors replicate the patterns and proportions of the main façade in aluminium.
In response to the local Conservation Area, and the industrial heritage of the neighbourhood, a glazed dark brick façade with punched holed windows is proposed, punctuated by an interspersed pattern of glass bricks. The pattern is an abstract interpretation of the ghost signs displayed on the adjoining buildings, providing texture to the façade and making a connection to the history of the site.
