The experience of walking up to the site and towards the horizon inspired this competition entry for a visitors’ centre at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.
Designed as if evolving from the natural typography, it connects the mainland to the sea. The building appears as a fissure in the hillside the wall draws the visitor toward the centre and the Causeway beyond.
A series of events such as glass bridges animate the visitor’s journey along the wall, which opens into a courtyard with a large slot window that encourages visitors to contemplate the view of the coastline.
Sunken exhibition spaces accessed by a ramp provide earth galleries housing a permanent exhibition that explains the history of the Causeway. The earth galleries are illuminated by lightshafts that punctuate the landscape above. Their cave-like quality makes reference to the Causeway’s mythology and folklore.
