Status Second place in international competition, 2019
Based on the Greater London Authority’s declaration that London must be carbon zero by 2050, our Gas Station of the Future proposes a hybrid building with facilities which convert residual waste into useful energy, and encourages personal interaction. Located on an existing petrol station site adjacent to Victoria Coach Station, the proposal occupies a dense urban area and busy transport interchange.
The building’s low-tech modular timber structure provides a robust but flexible framework for future adaptation. Four levels of interconnected uses are designed to attract drivers, non-drivers, local residents and visitors. The development creates a place to charge your electric car, deposit recyclable waste and recharge the mind, body and soul through education, nourishment and personal connection.
A waste incinerator and recycling bank in the basement creates compost fertiliser for the second floor allotment, and steam to power electricity turbines. Un-recyclable waste is repaired, reused or appropriated in a ground floor workshop. Excess water vapour is harvested for the vertical urban farm and rooftop garden hydroponics. This is a place of learning, craft and creativity; a catalyst for a zero-waste revolution.
