Squire & Partners were invited to submit ideas for the redevelopment of the existing Grade I Listed 1830s warehouses that form part of Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, a site of unique historic importance that includes the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station and first railway warehouse.

The existing building is a majestic, five-bay warehouse with a series of unique spaces that have been enhanced via simple but effective design gestures that preserve the building’s unique characteristics while allowing the introduction of modern day uses such as exhibition spaces, a restaurant and a virtual reality games lounge.

Parts of the warehouse retain their museum function, while the remaining portion has been designed as a flexible creative workspace of approximately 50,000 sq ft, along with supporting facilities such as a gym, meeting spaces and secure cycle parking, as well as access to the museum conferencing facilities, café and restaurant.
