St Katherine Docks Competition

Tower Hamlets, London

The brief for this competition was to create a two and a half storey restaurant, bar and associated plant on an old concrete pier near Tower Bridge, which only had a loading capacity equivalent to a single storey office floor. A high degree of transparency was needed to provide views out towards Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, as well as to be a striking attraction for the area.

The result is a multi-faceted transparent enclosure that can be swiftly erected from a small number of framing and cladding pieces. The main body consists of just five types of framing bars and a single type of glazed cladding panel that slots into each triangular shape to provide the necessary rigidity. Like a piece of origami the structure draws its strength from the junctions between the glazed panels it contains.
