The ‘Sand Tower’ takes inspiration from the existing vernacular of desert forts fund in the area. Seeming to grow from the sand they are built by individual blocks. A shallow ramp rises to a high platform providing 360 degree views of the reserve. The plan is inspired by the ‘Astrolabe’, an instrument used by early astronomers and navigators to measure the altitude of stars and planets. The two circles echo the astrolabe’s form and are designed to make the most of views from the ramp and terraces. An internal shaded atrium provides an area for rest and contemplation.
The tower is constructed from interlocking and stackable recycled plastic modules, allowing for easy manufacturing and construction.
