A conceptual competition was held to enhance visitors’ experience of these plains – where groups of enigmatic lines etched on the ground take the form of huge patterns and figures when viewed from the air.

The concept suggested the carving out of an existing outcrop of rocks to create a domed hall with a pantheon-like oculus at its apex and a camera-obscura set within it. This oculus would project an image of the entire vista of the exterior landscape but within the confines of a centralised space. At the same time, visitors could spend the night in rooms located within the other shell of the dome, in positions that provide views down individual lines.
Finally, a hot-air balloon was proposed as the only way to view this empty landscape from a great height without construction of a permanent intervention in the landscape.
