George Square is located at the transition between the historic mediaeval city and the later orthogonal grid of the Georgian new town, and marks the boundary between the civic district to the east and the commercial centre to the west.

The key design issue for the office building required by the brief was to ensure genuinely permeable and vibrant activity at ground floor level, and to bring life and vitality to the square. The architectural idea is a play between the classical orthogonal grid of the new city and the organic evolution of the original mediaeval town and the river that runs through it.

The load-bearing masonry enclosure with deep revealed windows, set in a pattern drawn from the classic buildings on the square, and built in local sandstone, ensures a new element on the square which is rooted in its history.
