The practice’s ownership, design, development and ongoing management of The Department Store in Brixton is a living embodiment of our ethos; one that creates tangible social value, that is sensitive to its context, and inspires new generations of designers, crafters and makers to look at the world through a fresh lens.
Our architects offer experience across a broad range of projects in several different sectors, varying from small bespoke fitouts to large-scale urban masterplans.
The emphasis is always on responding to context, sourcing the finest building materials and delivering a meticulously detailed product.
Our interior design department creates bespoke, award-winning
spaces and has designed numerous bespoke product ranges.
Our model shop creates physical concepts for early design ideas, as well as highly detailed models during the design
and planning process - with its work having been the centrepiece of several public consultations.
Our illustrators collaborate with project teams to clearly and beautifully articulate design ideas
using conceptual renderings, diagrams and hand-drawn perspectives.
Our dedicated computer visualisation team provide a vital tool in understanding buildings and spaces.
Their work greatly assists the design and planning process, from simple massing diagrams
to certified planning views and complex renders of façade details - helping designers and clients to make informed decisions throughout the various stages of design.

We believe education is the foundation of good design, and an important investment in the future of the industry. Supported by a dedicated Education team,
we actively take part in a variety of initiatives and organisations, from mentorship programmes to university lectures, crits and in-house study groups.
We reward hard work with a lively social life, providing year-round events including team days out, football, softball and yoga, involvement in design festivals and an annual office trip, which has been part of the practice for over 35 years.
Michael James Squire, born in 1946 to Raglan and Raye Squire and grandson of poet Sir John Squire, studied architecture at St John’s College, Cambridge, before co-founding Michael Squire Associates in 1976, which later became Squire & Partners. Under his leadership, Squire & Partners grew into one of the UK’s most respected architecture firms, recognized for creating finely crafted buildings in sensitive urban locations such as Chelsea Barracks and One Tower Bridge. His contributions to British architecture included serving as Jury Chair for the RIBA Awards and actively participating in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea’s Architecture Appraisal Panel and The Architecture Club.
Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, Michael led the firm from South Kensington to King’s Cross, eventually transforming a rundown Edwardian department store in Brixton into The Department Store and Department Store Studios—a project that merged architectural excellence with community engagement and garnered multiple awards.
Beyond his professional achievements, Michael was a devoted family man, known for his love of sailing, support of Chelsea FC, and a lively, youthful energy that endeared him to those around him. His legacy continues through the impactful work of Squire & Partners and the deep connections he fostered throughout his life.
