R3 King’s Cross

Location Lewis Cubitt Park, King's Cross

Status Planning consented November 2015

Granted planning consent in November 2015, R3 King’s Cross is Squire and Partners’ first building in the King’s Cross Central development.  The 61 apartment scheme occupies a prime position between Lewis Cubitt Park and Jellicoe Gardens, with a design which knits into the evolving urban setting and references the surrounding natural landscape.

The long narrow plot lends itself to two prominent elevations facing open spaces to the west and east.  Designs establish a strong visual and physical connection between the two gardens with a central glazed residential entrance, and apartment layouts which ensure that all residences enjoy park views, many with dual aspect.  In a nod to the former industrial character of King’s Cross, the design creates a pair of warehouse style buildings offset with an elegant contemporary envelope.

Facade designs allude to the history of King’s Cross as a significant railway terminus with an intricately detailed contemporary envelope organised by a rational masonry frame.  Elevations are characterised by splayed bays which undulate within the primary building line to create striking geometric balconies. The façade is further animated with a bespoke pattern featuring at a varying scale on decorative latticed screens and on bas-relief aluminium and concrete panels.
