Buckingham Gate

Location London SW1

Status Planning consent 2015

Description

Squire and Partners’ consented proposal for 25-28 Buckingham Gate addresses a wide plot on a Westminster street characterised by narrow Victorian and Queen Anne style buildings.  Located within the Birdcage Walk Conservation Area, the new building is designed to deliver a crafted contemporary addition which complements the established streetscape.

The residential building, which houses 24 apartments, draws on the Mansion Block typology with a grand entrance, symmetrical façade and set back mansard roof.  Taking inspiration from the rich palette of materials in the surrounding area, the building is articulated with a solid Portland stone base, handmade red brick mid-section characterised by full height projecting bay windows, and a contemporary penthouse clad in a perforated metal veil.

Within this framework, elements of embellishment – a key feature of the local vernacular – are introduced such as bespoke patterned balustrades and metal screens, adding detail and craftsmanship to the façade as well as enhancing privacy for residents.  The bespoke geometric pattern is derived from the arched wings of a bird in flight, making reference to Birdcage Walk, named after the aviaries for exotic birds which lined the southern edge of St James’ Park during the reign of James I.
